Oil spill off Mumbai worse than estimated
The oil spill on the seashore near Mumbai is very huge compared to what was estimated, according to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The disclosure came two days after the drip of natural petroleum oil from an ONGC pipeline.
At first, the MPCB roughly calculated that one thousand liters of oil had carried into the sea. According to Dr. Y.B. Sontakke, MPCB’s regional administrator for Navi Mumbai, the oil spill begun at night and stopped the following day. This means that much oil has flowed into the sea. It is certainly more than thrice the total the estimation of ONGC.
The MPCB has searched a report from the Directorate of Industrial Health and Safety which has collected samples from Uran to study the mass of oil in the water and soil.
The past crucial oil spills have resulted major destruction to the organisms and physical surroundings. In year 2010, the crash of commercial ships MSC Chitra and MV Khalija 3 off Mumbai’s coast leaked more than eight hundred tons of oil into the sea. More than 8.57 mangroves along the seashores of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad regions were very critical.
