
A passenger reached an underground platform and opened the transit app to display a prepaid ticket. The station had no signal, the app attempted to refresh the account, and the ticket screen remained blank. Although payment had already been completed, the passenger could not prove it at the gate.
Digital tickets reduce printing and make purchases convenient, but they often depend on several systems working at once. A user may need a charged phone, an active account, a functioning app, internet access, and a responsive server. Any one failure can turn a valid purchase into an access problem.
Ticket providers should allow an encrypted copy to remain available offline after purchase. The screen can include a rotating security code or time-limited token without requiring a live connection every time it is opened. Users should be told clearly when the offline copy expires and how to refresh it before travel.
A screenshot policy also needs clarity. Some systems accept screenshots while others reject them without warning. Where security permits, a printable backup or wallet pass can give passengers another option. Staff should have a process for verifying purchases when the app fails, rather than assuming the customer is trying to avoid payment.
Accessibility should be considered from the beginning. Large text, screen-reader support, high contrast, and a simple path to the ticket matter more when a crowded line is waiting. Requiring repeated logins or difficult captchas can make the system unusable at the moment of entry.
Digital tickets should make travel easier, not shift technical risk entirely onto the passenger. An offline mode recognizes that tunnels, rural routes, damaged phones, and server outages are normal conditions. A ticket that has been paid for should remain usable even when the network is not.
Providers should also publish an emergency contact method that does not depend on the same app experiencing the failure.
